Japan to Build 100 Billion Yen Large-Scale Dock... A "Counterattack" for a Shipbuilding Industry Pushed Back by Korea and China

Namura Shipbuilding in Japan will invest approximately 100 billion yen by 2035 to construct a new large-scale dock for LNG carriers in Imari Bay, Saga Prefecture.
This marks the first new large-scale dock construction in Japan since 2017, aimed at expanding production capacity to recover competitiveness in the shipbuilding industry, which has fallen behind Korea and China.
The new dock is planned to build 3 to 5 next-generation energy carriers, such as domestic LNG and ammonia, annually—a production line that has been suspended since 2019.
As it will be difficult to handle the target volume with Kawasaki Heavy Industries' plants alone, Namura Shipbuilding's new dock will be utilized as an additional production base.
The Japanese government has designated the shipbuilding industry as a core industry for economic security and has decided to double shipbuilding volume by investing a total of 1 trillion yen from both public and private sectors by 2035.
This investment by Namura Shipbuilding is expected to be the first major case of an expansion strategy supporting the government-led shipbuilding industry revitalization roadmap.
Considering the surge in construction costs, the company plans to proceed with the construction of the new dock and the introduction of equipment by utilizing subsidies from the government and local municipalities.
